Avignon [map]
photo val0001s From a base in Avignon (with the Pope's Palace, good hotels, restaurants and shopping) you can visit a lot of Provence. Avignon is central enough that you could spend your vacation based here, with day-trips or multi-day-trips in different directions. And there's such a tremendous variety of sites in the area that nobody will be disappointed, whatever their tastes.

Avignon-Gordes-Apt. A short day's drive east, and a very long day's sightseeing, this would be best as a 2-day trip. We'll take you to the Venice of Provence, a river gushing out of the ground, the cliffs and red earth of Gordes and Roussillon, to the market town of Apt.

Boat trips on the Rhone will take you to the Camargue, Arles or Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Nearby Isles-sur-la-Sorgue is beautiful, and full of antique shops.

South of town is Saint-Remy-de-Provence (art, Van Gogh and Nostradamus) and the nearby Roman ruins of Glanum. A day-trip to the east, past Cavaillon will take you to the Luberon villages [map D2].
